SL.T.CH MISSION - 8 P~38s, Lts. Stephan, Allan, Whalen, Jackson, Brown, Phillips,
Brophy and Newsome, together with a formation from the 2?tn Fighter Squadron,
took off at' 0735 hours to escort 1 Sunderland on an Air-Sea Rescue mission.
About 50 cr 60 miles off the southwest coast of Naples, Italy, at about 500 feet.
The formation rendezvoued with the Sunderland over SIDI AHMED, TUNISIA at 0750
hours. The formation did not see ary wreckage, but sighted 2 dinghies about a
quarter of a mile apart, one empty, and the other containing 6 men, at 1000
hours. The Sunderland landed and picked up these 6 men. Route: direct.
Weather: hazy all the way. No eneny shipping or aircraft seen. The formation
landed.at 1323 hours.

PArrrET.TF.RTA. Formation flew due east to target at 6,500 feet and dived to 4,000
feet before dropping their bombs. Direct hits were scored on target but extent
of damage could not be seen because of dust and dirt and the shelling of the
Island r.y 14 heavy cruisers and destroyers. Flak: light, not intense but accurate.
