Dibble: Killed in Action Description An account of the resource Typically pilots rotated home after their 50th mission. James took off for his 49th mission on Septemebr 9, 1943, and never returned.<br /><br />He was shot down on a straffing run near the town of Padula, Italy. Initially there was much confusion amongst the other P-38 pilots, and it was thought James survivied and may have been taken prisoner.<br /><br />Ultimately it was discovered that James had been shot down and then killed by German soldiers.<br /><br />James was ultiamtely brought home and buried in Mt. Capt. RUSH Group and Squadron leader. Its. SHEARER and BOWER Squadron leaders. Time over target 0925 hrs. at an altitude of 25 to 50 ft. Strafed Foggia A/D’s Nos. 1, 2 and 3 destroying and damaging many planes. R.R. Station at Roccheta strafed and left burning. Strafed locomotive at Rpccheta. Stra­ fed 3 trucks headed East on road near Anzi. R.R. Station and box cars stra­ fed near Anzi. Strafed one truck 4 mi. S.E. of Foggia. Strafed troop train and 20 cars at Potenza. 1 Ju-52 destroyed in the air on return to Sicily. Light inaccurate flak of slight intensity encountered from No. 1 A/D. A few bursts wbre 88mm, but were ineffective. Nine 5 in. guns along coast road 4 mi. S.W. of Manfredonia fired a few bursts. Three destroyers, 3 mi. off­ shore Marghertia d Savoia fired considerable amount of light flak. Light inaccurate flak from k/D No. 2, small arms and machine gun fire. Scattered but accurate 40mm flak from 15 mi. W. of Zapponita. Medium, tracking of moderate intensity and accurate flak at Sapri. Along Tanagro River Valley, light, tracking and scattered accurate flak. One heavy flak position of 4 to 6 guns, 1 1/2 miles North of Zapponita and 1/2 mile inland. 50 P-38’s down base by 1900 hrs. after landing at Termini and Gela. 7 P-38’s have not returned to base; l.was shot down (Lt. WILLIAMS) over the target and he was seen to bail out from 300 ft. and chute open. 1 P-38 is lost (Lt. VIALL), he was last seen at 0900 hrs. leaving fornation as he could, not release his belly tanks. 5 P-38’s are still in Sicily, 2 of which crash landed. CHRONOLOGY: Time off 0706 hrs. ENEMY AIRDROMES: Observed a landing strip at 40® 05’ N. 15® 35* E. on the coast of Italy. On this strip there was a 4 engine plane, believed to have been a B-17 and a s/e a/c believed to have been a Spitfire. ENEMY GROUND ACTIVITY; Observed a locomotive at Roccheta. Three trucks on road near Anzi, beaded East. Several box cars near Anzi. One truck near Foggia. Twenty train cars at Potenza.
