Stefania: well mister Pisano. Thank you for your courtesy. I want to ask you something about the period of the Second World War in Padula. Do you remember something about this period? Pisano: yes. I was 10 years old. I was a child, but I remember the airplanes flying on my house and I remember their sound. I usually saw the airplanes on Padula. Stefania: well. I think that it was horrible for a child. Do you remember something about an airplane's crash? It was at September 9,1943. Pisano: yes. I don't remember the exact date, but I remember the airplane. Stefania: well, do you want to tell me your memories? Pisano: I was a child. I was 10 years old. I worked with my father in our field. I remember that I heard a sound and I saw three airplanes. They were coming from the north, from Sala Consilina. Stefania: three airplanes? Are you sure of that? Pisano: yes, three airplanes. They flying all together. Suddenly I heard shots and I saw that two airplanes were damaged. Stefania: what happened? Pisano: I remember that the pilot of one of two airplanes ejected himself out of the airplane. I don't know where the airplane crashed. The second airplane was mainly damaged. It fell over a field. The airplane bounced twice and it crashed over the Ferrigno's field. Stefania: I think that it was terrible for a child. What happened then? Pisano: I went to Ferrigno's field. I saw the airplane crashed and I saw a person, probably the pilot, to come out the airplane. I think that he had a fractured leg. At the same time I saw many person running to the field. 1 understood that they were Germans. I hid myself. Stefania: and then? What happened then? Pisano: a German picked up his handgun and he killed the pilot. It was terrible. Then they came away. Stefania: my God. Do you remember something else? Pisano: yes. Two person, Antonio e Vito Cimino, came on the field. They buried the pilot. I ran away. It was terrible. The war is terrible. I can't forget what I saw. Many years after this event I know that the Americans came in Padula. They took the body of the pilot and they brought it in America. Dibble: We want to give our excuses for the long respond on your letter but because of the technical investigation, it took a lot longer than we thought. We have finished the investigation with these results. The airplane came from Sala Consilina and fell at 1400 hours on the afternoon of 9/9/43 at a location named Padula. on the rear. The airplane was hit The witnesses which were going to work in the fields, saw the airplane with the rear in flames going down for a crash landing, The airplane, when it crashed, landed, flipped and one of the wings went against a cabina elettrica. Immediately, German soldiers from the Certosa di Padula, upon arrival, they started to shoot small arms, and after they were sure the pilot was dead, they took a majority of the pieces of the airplane with them. The German soldiers noticed that the peasants going to work in the fields stayed there to look. Eventually they called two of the men, one by the name of Paolo and Vito Cimino, two brothers, and they told them to dig a grave so they could bury the body of the pilot, Lt. Dibble. After a week, Antonio, which is the son of Paolo Cimino, which at that particular time, was learning how to be a cabinet-maker or wood­ worker, made a cross in wood and put it on the grave where the pilot was buried. That particular piece of land at that time belonged to the family of the Cimino's. One year after that, the body was dug up by the English forces, and if you come to Italy, we will give you some more details at that par­ ticular time. Cimino Vito, who is still alive, born in Teggiano, February 1, 1911, a resident of Padula since 1938. He was the first one to arrive there and the only one who is still alive. Some letters recovered from Lieutenant Dibble’s wife, who later remarried, made mention of the fact that he’d been recom­ mended for the Distinguished Flying Cross, but didn’t give any details of the mission in­ volved. Mr. Dibble contacted the Air Force con­ cerning his uncle’s case, and was told that the service would need historical evidence to verify the recommendation before the medal could be awarded. It took three years of research and tracking down former squadron pilots to reconstruct the events that first led to the Distinguished Flying Cross citation. The Distinguished Flying Cross was awarded posthumously to the family of 1st Lt. James Dibble during a Dec. 14 ceremony at Wright-Patterson. He was killed only nine days later, his unit eventually transferred to another com­ mand, and the recommendation is thought to have been “lost” in the interim. A nephew, James Dibble, the lieutenant’s namesake, took an interest in his uncle’s part in the war after visiting the Air Force ' Museum here in 1985. “I saw a picture there of the North Africa area, and it spurred the whole thing,” Mr. Dibble, now 40, recalled. “Very little was known by the family up until that point.” What Mr. Dibble uncovered was the mis­ sion the 94th Fighter Squadron flew on Aug. 30, 1943. As group commander that day, Lieu­ tenant Dibble led the 94th and two other squadrons of the First Fighter Group — a total of 44 P-38 fighters — as they escorted two bomber groups against the marshalling yards at Aversa. The group was attacked by 75 German fighters as they neared the target. Lieute­ nant Dibble formed his fighters in close to WM TWO NOTES Tn NOTE the bombers, then fought a defensive air battle that lasted close to an hour. Thirteen American fighters were downed, but not a single bomber was lost in the raid. A little more than a week later, while strafing a German convoy in Italy, his plane was shot down and Lieutenant Dibble was reported missing in action. A year later his status was revised to killed in action and, in October 1946, his family was informed that the lieutenant’s grave had been located near Naples. The Distinguished Flying Cross citation was again submitted to the Air Force in May 1990, bearing the signature of Lieutenant Dibble’s former commanding officer. “It was very emotional for me,” said William Dibble, Lieutenant Dibble’s brother, who accepted the posthumous award at Wright-Patterson. “I remembered all of the pain my mother and father felt during the time he was listed as missing?in action. After reading Stan's report of the mission, Ray Schulze responded: "I remember the mission very well. I was happy to hear that Stan survived despite his ordeal. I will not dispute Stan's report of the mission.” “However, I say the reports I filed following the mission that day was the way I saw the results unfold. In the turmoil of a gun battle things happen very rapidly and the markings on our planes were not that large and identification of an individual plane was not fool-proof. I do believe that Jim bailed out of his plane that day. There was so much anti-aircraft fire coming in our direction it will always remain a partial mystery of Jim's fate and how he met his maker." Ray Schulze's assessment is understandable. The formation was flying at over 300 mph ten feet off the ground. His plane was being shot at from every imaginable direction. Information from other pilots indicated that the anti-aircraft fire was as heavy as they had ever seen it. By the time Ray noticed the planes ahead of him on fire, Stan had already overtaken Jim's plane and was in the lead. The enemy fire was so intense few of the other pilots could even successfully complete their attack on the convoy, and seeing two planes already shot down, returned to the base. We now knew that Jim had indeed been killed on September 9, 1943. He had not, as my Grandmother feared, been shot while floating to earth in his parachute. Immediatamente accorsero dei soldati tede- schi, provenienti dalla Certosa di Padula, ove vi era il Comando e 0a.:ipo di concentramento ( vedi foto n.5). Arrivati sul luogo cominciarono a sparare colpi di arma da fuoco e dopo essersi assicurati che il piio- ta fosse morto, portarono via gran parte dell'aereo. Dopodiche gli stes- si soldati tedeschi, accorgendosi della presenza dei contadini, i quali erano rimasti tra i campi a curiosare, chiamarono due di loro, Paoio e Vito Cimino, e gli ordinarono di scavare un fosso per seppellire il corpo del pilots tenente Dibble (vedi foto n.3 e 4). Dopo una settimana Antonio, Pnoio Cimino, che all'epoca era apprendista falegna- figlio del contadino me, costrui una croce di legno e la pose sul terreno dove era stato sep- pellito il pilots americano, che si trovava nella propriety dei signori Cimino. When the grave was opened it" was found f: “I that after digging for a foot or so the grave filled with water, water, into which the laborers sank above their knees. Hip boots were obtained and on the second attempt were successful.in reaching the remains. _ It was impossible to establish identity as no clothing remained on the body and only one (1) shoe was found in the grave. From appearances it may have been an officer's dress shoe, though no size or color could be determined. Tooth charts could not be taken as only a small portion of the skull remained.. The body was too badly decomposed from long submersion in water to establish anatomical characteristics. A rough wooden cross was found markT ing the grave and after, careful scrutiny a faint inscription, was made out. It consisted of three words and the date, of which only the first word and the date were legible. The inscription was written in Italian and is as follows;"CADUTO--- ODRIO 9 SETTEMBRE 1943." No other information could be obtained'. 4. The reismains were disinterred and reinterred in the U.S. Military Cemetery, Naples, Italy and recorded on the QUO Form-1 GRS as BELIEVED TO BE; 1st Lt.
